To be successful in any kind of sales, you’ve got to believe in what you’re selling — or at least you’ve got to convince your customers that you do.

Well, I sell the best product in the world: The Roanoke Valley, and you better know that I believe in it! Introducing newcomers to the Roanoke region or taking longtime residents to areas of the valley where they’ve never been is one of the great pleasures of my job.

Folks moving to Roanoke — especially those coming from urban areas or regions north of us — are often pleasantly surprised at the cost of living in Roanoke, and there’s a reason for that. In fact, recent statistics from the Council for Community and Economic Research confirm it: With a cost of living well below the national average, Roanoke is a super value. The Roanoke Regional Partnership says, “When it comes to cost of living, Roanoke offers the best value of any metro in Virginia.” The partnership’s graphic (below) tells the story:

The council’s Cost of Living Index is based on pricing data collected within a participating area, including housing, utilities, groceries, health care, transportation and other goods and services. This allows individuals, businesses and others to make cost-of-living comparisons between areas. Roanoke Regional Partnership has a comparison calculator on its website that will let you compare Roanoke to other areas.

Roanoke’s cost of living also put us ahead of several similar markets across the South, including Richmond, Asheville and Chattanooga.

So this all sounds great, right? But what does it mean?

Well, very simply: Your money goes further in Roanoke than in any metro in Virginia. On a national scale, the Cost of Living Index ranks Roanoke as the 44th lowest-cost metro area. That puts Roanoke’s cost of living at less than 83 percent of metros nationwide.
